For systems on 1 inch water mains we recommend including a pre-sediment filter. A pre-sediment filter is a 20 inch housing with a 5 micron filter cartridge that goes on the in-line prior to the LifeSource tank. It is designed to remove physical particulates like sand, dirt, and rust before they reach the carbon filtration bed. Systems with water mains larger than 1 inch do not need pre-sediment filters because they have sufficient water flow to thoroughly flush out the carbon bed. The pre-sediment filter will improve the performance and extend the life of the carbon. In most areas cartridges only need to be replaced every 6 months at $6 each.
