Your Questions Are Normal

Most homeowners have never had a whole house water system installed before, so questions about timing, disruption, and preparation are completely normal.

Understanding the installation process removes uncertainty and helps you plan. If you're still deciding which type of system is right for your home, our Homeowner's Guide to Choosing a Water Filtration System can help you evaluate your options.

PHASE 1

Before Installation

How Long Does Installation Take?

Most whole house water filtration installations are completed in 2-5 hours. How LifeSource simplifies replacement and is designed for extended life:

System complexity

Installation location accessibility

Existing plumbing configuration

Home construction type

Where Does the System Install?

Primary Determining Factor: The system must be installed close to your water main,  where water enters your home. Pipes run from the water main to the system, so proximity is the key factor in determining installation location.

Common Installation Locations:

Outside (Side of House)

  • Most common in warm climates (California, Arizona, Nevada)
  • Direct access to water main
  • No indoor space needed
  • Not suitable for freeze-prone areas

Garage

  • Common in newer homes with easy water main access
  • Adequate space and weather protection
  • Convenient for maintenance

Basement/Crawl Space

  • Traditional location in older homes and cold climates
  • Often near water heater and water main entry point
  • No indoor space needed

Installation Day:

What's Required

  • Access to main water line where water enters home
  • Approximately 2' x 4' floor space
  • Level surface for system placement
  • Electrical outlet

Do I Need to Be Home? (YES)

  • Technicians need access to the installation area
  • You'll receive a system walkthrough and explanation
  • Questions can be answered in real-time
  • Final testing and verification performed with you present

Plan to be available: Block out 2–4 hours on installation day to ensure you're present from start to finish.

What Preparation Is Needed? (Before Installation Day)

  • Clear the Installation Area
  • Remove items from around the installation area
  • Provide a clear path for technicians and equipment
  • Ensure garage, basement, or exterior access is available

LifeSource teams bring all necessary tools, equipment, and materials.

PHASE 2

During Installation

Will My Water Be Shut Off?

Temporary Shutoff: Water to your home will be shut off during connection to the main line, typically 30–60 minutes of the total installation time. Water Returns: Once connections are complete, water service resumes while testing and final setup continues.

Is Installation Messy or Disruptive?

Interrupted by the Water Disconnect?

  • Water is usually off for only 30-60 minutes
  • Core connection work happens first
  • General installation work continues after service returns

Interrupted by the Work Condition?

  • Minimal noise and normal tool use
  • Clean work areas and contained materials
  • No major demolition or full-day disruption

PHASE 3

After Installation

When Can I Use Water Normally?

Immediately. Once installation is complete, we recommend running faucets for 10 to 15 minutes so air and debris from the installation are cleared from your pipes.

What to Expect Initially

  • Water may run briefly cloudy as the system settles (normal)
  • Taste and odor improvements often noticeable immediately
  • Chlorine-free water available from all taps right away

What Maintenance Is Required?

  • Zero Ongoing Maintenance
  • No filter changes
  • No ongoing tasks or monitoring
  • System operates passively and continuously
  • Professional service available when replacement is needed

What If I Have Questions After Installation?

  • Ongoing Support Available
  • California-based support team available
  • Direct contact information provided
  • Technical questions answered
  • Service scheduled if needed

PHASE 4

Installation-Specific Questions

Can I Install a System Myself?

No. Professional Installation is Required. Why:

  • Proper sizing verification ensures optimal performance
  • Code-compliant plumbing connections required
  • Pressure testing prevents future leaks
  • Professional accountability if issues arise
  • Required for warranty coverage

Why Not DIY

  • All installations should be done by licensed contractors
  • Plumbing errors cause leaks and water damage
  • Incorrect setup compromises system effectiveness

LifeSource Approach

We install with our own factory-trained teams, ensuring consistent quality and accountability.

Can Systems Be Installed in All Homes?

First Requirement

You must have your own water main line. Homes with shared water lines (some apartments, condos, multi-family properties) cannot accommodate whole house filtration without building permission.

Compatibility

If you have your own water main line, whole house systems work in:

  • Single-family homes
  • Townhomes with main line access
  • Properties with well water
  • Homes with municipal water
  • New construction and existing homes
  • Commercial buildings such as hotels and multi-family buildings

Limitations

  • Apartments/condos without main line access may require building permission
  • Homes with extremely limited space near the water main need creative placement solutions
  • Shared water lines complicate installation

What Happens If My Home Has Unique Challenges?

Custom Solutions Available

LifeSource teams have decades of experience with:

  • Unusual plumbing configurations
  • Limited space constraints near water mains
  • Multiple water sources
  • Challenging access points
  • Older home plumbing

Problem-Solving Approach

Professional installers adapt to your home's specific conditions rather than forcing standard approaches.

In some cases, installation challenges stem from aging or undersized systems already in place. If you're unsure whether repair, adjustment, or replacement makes the most sense, understanding when it's time to replace or upgrade a filtration system can help clarify next steps.
